Our verdict

Consistent rather than surprising, and priced accordingly at €45–60 a head. Come for the room, the wine list and the fact that it will not let you down; go to Villa Spiza for the cooking.

What kind of place it is

A high-ceilinged former shop turned bistro, with modern Mediterranean plates, a serious wine list and a room that is genuinely lovely — the kind of room you book for an anniversary or a dinner with someone you want to impress. It is the most reliable smart dinner in the centre, which means it will not let you down and it will not surprise you, and the price reflects that.

For a smart dinner with the harbour in front of you, Zrno Soli is upstairs at the ACI marina.

What to order

The sharing plates are the way to do it — a couple of starters, a pasta, a main, and a pudding. The steak is consistent, the sea bass is consistent, and the wine list is the reason to come if you care about wine. The tasting menu is available some nights and is worth asking about, because it is the one time the kitchen takes a risk.

If wine is the point, a palace cellar tasting explains Dalmatia's own grapes in ninety minutes.

Practical

Book two days ahead in summer for a table; the bar seats take walk-ins and are the better spot for two, because you can watch the room and the kitchen pass. Around €45–60 a head with wine. Open lunch and dinner, closed Sundays outside high season.

A Dalmatian Cooking Class

Four or five hours that start at the green market and the fish hall and end with you eating what you bought. The good ones shop first, which is the half that teaches you something: how to tell this morning's fish from yesterday's, and what is actually in season.

Adventure

Electric Bike Tour of the City and Marjan

Three hours that get you round the palace, up Marjan and out along the coast without the climb. The electric assist is not laziness — it is the difference between seeing the top of the hill and reading about it.

Central Club

Nightlife

Central Club

Central is the closest thing Split has to a conventional big-room European nightclub, centrally placed and built for larger DJ nights. It does not get going until after midnight. Arrive at 22:30 and you will find a half-empty room and conclude the city is dead; come back at one and it is unrecognisable.

Old Town Walking Tour

History

Old Town Walking Tour

Ninety minutes through the palace with someone who can explain what you are looking at. Worth it on your first morning: the palace makes far more sense with a guide, and everything you do afterwards is better for it.

Diocletian's Palace

History

Diocletian's Palace

Diocletian's Palace is free: its lanes, the Peristyle, the domed Vestibule and the central passage through the cellars are open at all hours with no gate. You pay only for interiors — the side halls of the cellars (€10 for adults as of October 2026) and the cathedral, bell tower, crypt, treasury and Temple of Jupiter, ticketed separately. Built around AD 305, it is still full of homes, bars and shops.

Game of Thrones Walking Tour

History

Game of Thrones Walking Tour

Two hours around the palace cellars, the Peristyle and the Klis-facing viewpoints where Meereen was filmed. Honest verdict: worth it if you love the show, skippable if you merely watched it — a standard palace tour covers the same stones with more history.

The nine-until-midnight part of a Split night, and the best of it. Small cellars and side rooms inside Diocletian's Palace pour Dalmatian wine by the glass with no music you have to shout over. Arrive before nine if you want a table, and leave around midnight when the lanes empty.
