Varoš is the old stone village on the hill, Bačvice is where the city swims, Meje is quiet and green, Žnjan is new and open. Where you stay changes what Split feels like.

Bačvice

Neighborhood

Bačvice

Ten minutes east of the palace and Split turns into a beach town. Bačvice has the sand, the picigin players, the beach bars and the noise. Stay here if you want to swim before breakfast and be out until three.

Meje

Neighborhood

Meje

Quiet, green and expensive, on the south side of Marjan hill. Villas, pine trees, sea views and almost no nightlife. It is a fifteen-minute walk to the Riva and a different city altogether.

Old Town & Diocletian's Palace

Neighborhood

Old Town & Diocletian's Palace

Split's old town is not next to a Roman palace — it is inside one. People live in the walls, hang washing between second-century columns and take deliveries through gates built for an emperor. Everything worth seeing is a five-minute walk from everything else.

Varoš

Neighborhood

Varoš

The stone fishermen's village on the slope below Marjan, all narrow stepped lanes and low houses. It is where the best konobas hide, where cats outnumber cars, and where you will get lost in the good way.

Žnjan

Neighborhood

Žnjan

The long modern beach strip east of the centre, rebuilt with promenades, sports courts and beach clubs. Good for families and anyone who wants space; a bus ride or a forty-minute seafront walk from the old town.
